THREW “HANDLE” AT LICENSEE. BAD LANGUAGE IN HOTEL BAR. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The story of how George Edgar Pengelly threw an empty beer “handle” at the head of the licensee of the White Swan Hotel yesterday afternoon was related in the Magistrate’s Court today, when Pengelly appeared on five charges as a. result of getting drunk. He was sentenced to 3!) days’ imprisonment on a charge of using obscene language in the public bar of the White Swan Hotel, and on four other charges he was convicted and discharged by All 1 E. C. Lovvey, S.M. Pengelly pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector Packer said that Pengelly had gone into the hotel and bought a “handle” of beer. The licensee had refused accused the loan of 2s 6d, but had given him a “handle” of beer. The licensee had then turned away and Pengelly had thrown the empty “handle” at him. He missed, and a bottle of whisky and a measure were damaged by the flying mug. Pengelly at the same time used bad language, concluded Sub-Inspector Packer He had been carrying on for years and had not improved.
