THE TIMARU BAND
COUNCIL ASKS FOR INQUIRY.
CITIZENS’ PETITION RECEIVED.
At a meeting of the Timaru Borough Council last evening the Mayor (Mr AV. G. Tweedy) announced that lie had received a petition signed by about 450 citizens praying that, as Chief Magistrate of Timaru, he would bold a public inquiry into the decision of the Municipal Band Control Board to dispense with the services of the conductor (Lieut. R. J. Simpson). After considerable discussion the following motion was carried by lour votes to two, two members refraining from voting and one member being absent: “That the council request the Band Control Board that a board be appointed to inquire into the Municipal Band’s request to dismiss tho conductor, and that this board should consist of an independent chairman, and one representative each from the Timaru Borough Council and the Municipal Band, these representatives to agree on ilie appointment of a chairman. The inquiry should be held immediately, and the board report as early as possible, the order of reference to be the complaints against the conductor and tne discipline and control of the band.’
