THE UNEMPLOYED.
DECREASE ON YEAR AGO. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 28. The unemployed returns at May 7 disclose a reduction ol compared with the figure at May 8 last year. Compared with the position last month, however, there is an increase of 1099 because of the falling oft ol seasonal employment. Details are as follows :—Registered, but not on relief, 1244; on sustenance awaiting placement 4222, on scheme 5 relief 2848, total 8314. On sustenance totally unfit for employment for health or other reasons 8000. Expenditure for four weekly period to May 7:—From employment promotion fund, as distinct from relief expenditure, estimated at £233,456.
