ASHBURTON’S WOMEN’S GAMES. MATCHES ON SATURDAY. The first matches in the Ashburton .Women’s Hockey Competition were played to-day, when the grounds were rather heavy after showers of rain in the early part of the afternoon. The match between Hinds and Wakanui created much interest and a very close game resulted in Hinds defeating Wakanui by 3 goals to 2. The Hinds forward line showed better combination than Wakanui although the latter made some noticeable movements. The scorers for Hinds were J. Lowe, J. Dawson, and 0. Davison, who each shot ono goal. The Wakanui scorers were F. Gudsell and P. Brand. Lowcliffe defeated Methven liy four 1 goals to one in a match played at Ashburton. Goals were scored for the winners by J. Hawke (2), J. Harrison and C. Dutton, while Methven’s goal was shot by It. Tyler. The match was extremely even and play moved from end to end very quickly. Lowcliffe showed good combination in the forward line, and were at times too fast for the Methven backs, white the backs played safely, indeed, especially the goal-keeper, who made some splendid saves. Methven did not have the same dash as they exhibited against Hinds last week. The Forwards bunched and were inclined to play too much on their own. The backs.seemed to be lost at times and were often caught out of position. While the goal-keeper made some good saves, she aid not seem up to form at all Mr V. T. Corbett was referee. All players would be well-advised to wear boots with studs, as sand shoes gave them no hold on the ground on Saturday. Section B. In the match at Hinds between Tinwald and,Hinds, Timvald won by two goals to one ina fast and, even game. Goals for Timvald were scored by Miss E. Henderson, while the Hinds goal was shot ,by Miss N. Davidson. Mrs Hampton was the referee. Showing better combination, Methven beat Rakaia by three goals to one at Methven. The game was fast and fairly even. Miss J. Young shot Methven’s three goals, while Miss L. Skinner scored for Rakaia. The referee was the Rev. L. G. Hanna. Section C. Rakaia defeated Wakanui in the G. Section match played at Rakaia, the score being one goal to nil. The play was very even throughout and the match proved to be interesting. Mrs Harrison was referee. MEN’S MATCHES. / Competition matches were played by the Ashburton Men’s Hockey Sub-As-sociation on Saturday. Seniors. The match between Ashburton and Wakanui resulted in a win for Wakanui by 8 goals to 1. The Wakanui team showed superior combination throughout which accounted for the big margin in the final score. For Wakanui H. Wilson shot five goals, A. Anderson one, T. Bennett one, and J. Kenny one. S. Rogers scored Ashburton s only goal. Although defeated by Baring Square by five goals to nil, Methven played a much improved game. At half-time the score was ono to nil and tearing Square shot four goals within ten minutes immediately after the second spell had commenced. After that the match was even. The scorers for Baring Square were G .E. Beauvais (2), K. Maefarlane (2), K. Lill (1). The referees were Messrs W. Ford gnd A. C. Vincent. Juniors. In the junior match between Baring Square A and Ashburton the former won by five goals to nil. The scorers for Baring Square were N. Hopkins, J. Loach, G. Penman, 51. Penman, B. Olliver. The match between Baring Square B and Boys’ Brigade resulted: in a win for the former by two goals to one. For Baring Square A. Bell and A. Travers each shot a goal. Dewar scored for Boys’ Brigade.
