AMATEURS AT PLEASANT POINT. THE ASHBURTON SUCCESSES. Several Ashburton Amateur boxers took £art in the tournament staged by the South Canterbury Amateur Boxing Association, at Pleasant Point on (Saturday evening. A. Miller (Geraldine) lOst and G. Melrose (Ashburton) 10.2, fought out the final of the light-weight contest, and the bout resulted in a win for Miller. The first round was fast, with Melrose gaining a slight advantage, but Miller went in during the second round and got through his opponent’s guard several times. Miller made the fight in the final round; more of Ins punches connected, and lie won the contest on points. T. Lister (Ashburton) 11.1 defeated F. Hill (Ashburton) 11.13. In the first round, neither fighter tried, to get in , close, and the punches were fairly plentiful. Lister in the second round got home to the face several times. ' Making his professional boxing debut, Brian McKay (Hastings) outpointed i Percy Kelly (Auckland) in a 10-round 1 contest on Saturday. Kelly’s punching ‘ capacity was expected to prove decisive, and half-way through the fight he seemed the likely winner, but his opponent i began to rally in the seventh round and kept it going through the rest of the i distance, overcoming his early deficit i and satisfying the referee, to wliom the i decision was left by tlie judges.
