THE SOUTH AFRICAN ELECTIONS. DEFEAT OF ONE MINISTER, (United Press Association—Copyright.) (Received This Day, 9.5 a.m.) GAPE TOWN, May 20. < In the South African general election the final state of the parties is as follows (the state of parties in the last Parliament being giyen in parentheses):
Mr A. P. J. Fourie, formerly Minister for Commerce and Industries, is the only Minister not returned. General J. B. M. Hertzog’s majority over the Nationalist candidate js 526. General J. C. Smuts (Minister for Justice) secured 75 per cent, of the votes in his electorate, his majority being 2000. The Minister for Finance (Mr N. C. Havenga), in a stiff fight to retain his seat, has a majority of 331 over his formed Cabinet colleague, Mr Justice Beyers, who was Minister for Mines in General Hertzog’s Cabinet in pre-fusion days.
