(From Our Own Correspondents.) METHVEN. SUCCESSFUL SALE OF WORK. A most successful sale of work was held in Metliven on Thursday under the control of the Board of Managers of St. John’s Presbyterian Church. The sum of £BO, excluding donations was realised. The stalls were attractively decorated and interestingly stocked. The organiser was Mrs J. T. Mangin. The stallholders were: —• Produce, Mesdames A. Lochhead, M. Macale, J. Watson; ll|d, Mesdames Gilmour, 01liver, and Prebble; Sewing, Mesdames A. L. Mangin, A. Wilson, and J. V T ootton; Cakes, Mesdames K. Aitken, A. Guthrie, H. E. Lock; and Miss J. Gilmour; Dips, Mesdames A. Paddy and L. V. Bibby; Tea rooms, Mesdames W. Lock, J. Campbell, H. Maginness, J. Penney, G. Chambers, and Bible Class girls; Sweets, Misses R. Carleton, E. Campbell, and Bible Class girls. Lexicon Drive, At the conclusion of the meeting of the St. John’s Bible Class on Thursday evening an enjoyable time w r as spent in the playing of the increasingly popular game of Lexicon. Play was most enthusiastic and resulted as follows:— : Lowest points, Miss E. Campbell; most shifts, Miss R. Carleton. A challenge ha 9 been issued to the Lyndhurst class for a Lexicon tournament. LQWCLIFFE, THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The Lowcliffe Women’s Institute met recently, Mrs Mcßae presiding. It "was decided to hold a handcraft school next week. The delegates read reports of the annual meeting of the Mid-Canterbury Federation, held recently in Ashburton. Mesdames W. Campbell and J. B. Smith and Miss M. McKie gave a demonstration on brass and pewter work. Results of competitions were:—Twoegg sponge cake, Mrs J. Pearce 1, Mrs J. B. Smith 2, Miss M. McKie 3. Article from odds and ends: Mrs T. The hostesses were Mesdames W. Campbell and W. B. Clarke, and Miss E. McPhail.

WILLOWBY. SOCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL CLUB The Willowby Social and Educational' Club held its fortnightly meeting on Wednesday evening in the' Church Schoolroom. The evening was spent in games. Ping-pong was played for the first time on the new tables. Parlour games were also played. Mr Allan Chapman presided. \ Personal. Mr H. Turnbull, the newly-appointed headmaster of the Willowby School, arrived during this week and will commence his duties on Monday. MAYFIELD. GIRLS’ FRIENDLY SOCIETY. The monthly meeting of the Girls’ Friendly Society was held on Thursday afternoon. Miss E. Goldsmith »presided. Preliminary arrangements were made for a dance to be held early in July. It was decided to procure a.-parcel of sewing to be done for the Orphanage in Timaru. A competition was w r on by Miss Peggy "Whiting. The hostesses were Misses Phyllis Todd and Ruth Harrison. - CHERTSEY. THE SOWING OF WHEAT. . Farmers are now racing against time to get in.their wheat, which is going in 'really well considering the rain the land has had. Potatoes are being lifted throughout tlie district, but crops are only fair. Personal. Mr Newburn (Stationmaster) is on annual leave and. Mr L. Chambers, until recently assistant master at Chertsey, is relieving him. Mr J. Grant, of Ashburton has taken up his duties as cadet at the Chertsey Railway Station. Air B. Toner, who has been caretaker of the Acton Main races at Rakaia. for the last five years, is leaving. Mi* F Cain, of Hororata, takes up the position on Monday.
