“PICKABACK” FLYING.
SUCCESSFUL, TRIAL HELD. ; LOADS feU# LONG DISTANCES. (United Press Association —Copyright.) LONDON, January'2o. Britain’s ne.w “.pickaback” flying boat, consisting of a. smaller ’plane, named Mercury, pbrehed on the t°P °f the mother craft, made a successful first trial flight, encircling Rochester at the height of 1000 feet' for an hour. The next test will be the crucial one. Mercury will then be' launched from the top of the mother craft at a height of 5000 feet and the ’planes will fly separately. The “pickaback”, will possibly revolutionise long-distance flying, the idea being to release the smaller ’plane in mid-air for long journeys with heavy loads after the larger ’plane has given it a start from 5000 feet.
