LONG DRY SPELL.

WARM WEATHER IN ASHBURTON. FINE CONDITIONS CONTINUE. A long spell of fine weather has been experienced in the Ashburtn County. There has been no rain for twelve days and the temperatures have been. warm. Since January 1 there have only been seven days in which the temperature lias been under 70 degrees, and the average has been 72.7 degrees, an unusually high figure for Ashburton, although the heat has only, on a few occasions, been oppressive. Conditions were warm again yesterday, the maximum shade temperature being 79 degrees and the insiae minimum last night's 6 degrees. Fine weather was experienced again to-day. The sky was overcast in tne morning, but the temperature was ,mild. A light north-westerly wind was blowing. > There was a heavy dew overnight, one point of moisture being recorded at/ the Domain weather station. The barometer had fallen considerably at 9 o’clock this morning, standing at 29.47 inches, compared with 29.77 inches yesterday morning.

The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather:—

General inference: The recent anticyclone is passing eastwards off- the North Island and a rather intense westerly depression is crossing the South Island. Pressure is rising over Eastern Australia. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Uamaru i* as follows: Moderate to strong northerly winds, backing to southerlies shortly; weather changeable and squally with scattered showers and becoming cooler; seas becoming rather rough to rough.
