COMPULSORY SUBJECT
SWIMMING IN THE SCHOOLS. EDUCATION BOARD DESIRES. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Urgent representations to the Government to make swimming a compulsory subject in the schools will be made by the Canterbury Education Board, according to a decision reached at a meeting this morning. Members agreed that action should be taken immediately so as to take advantage of the summer months. Referring to the number of drowning accidents during the holidays, Mr C. S. Thompson said that the Board should use these fatalities to press home to the authorities the need for compulsory swimming and life-saving training and the need for swimming facilities in schools.
