EXPORT PRICES
CAUSE OF ECONOMIC RECOVERY
REPLY TO THE PREMIER.
(Per Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, January 20
The improvement in the economic outlook oi New Zealand was attributed by Mr W. W. Mullrollaiid (president of the New Zealand Fanners Union) in .commenting on 31 r Ravage’s statement yesterday, not to the Government but to the improvement in the prices of the Dominion’s export commodities.
“It is the amount of overseas goods that exports bring back that determines the standard of living and comfort,” he says, “and no action by anybody in New Zealand, including the Government, can make the export production purchase more of the world’s goods on the world markets than the world is willing to give in exchange as a particular’ time. “ft is important to emphasise this fact at present, because there are under discussion some matters which may he very incorrectly dealt with, if this is not fully recognised,” continuues Mr Mulholland. “Discussions on the compensated price may have tended to give the impression, never for a moment intended, that it 'is possible to devise a policy that would make New Zealand independent of fluctuating prices for her exports.”
