CAR SMASHES WINDOW

MOVES WHILE UNOCCUPIED. AUCKLAND, January 19. Damage estimated at £75 was done by a motor-car which crashed into a large plate-glass window on the premises of Messrs Greig and Esterman, furnishers, of Queen street. The car had been left by the driver, Paymaster Lieutenant-Commander J. K. Highton, parked above Unity Hall, and, unoccupied, it moved off, running diagonally across Queen Street. It mounted the footpath, missing a telegraph pole by a very small margin. The right front wheel of the car crashed into the window, half of which was knocked out, and fragments of glass, some of them of considerable size, were scattered along the pavement for about 20 yards. The window, which was eight feet high and more than 15 feet long, was valued at £SO, being insured with the .South British Company. ’ Further damage was done to the frame and various articles of furniture on display; in the window, these being scratched by flying glass. The damage to the car was confined to the buckling of the mudguard and parking light on the right side.
