STRIKE IN FOUNDRY

TROUBLE OVER HOLIDAYS. OVER THE CHRISTMAS PERIOD. DUNEDIN MEN'S COMPLAINT. (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, This Day. As a protest against an alleged unfair holiday system all the ISO employees at Shacklock’s South End Foundry struck this morning after a stop-work meeting, at which it was decided to cease work for the day. The basis of the men’s grievance is that instead of the customary closing down on December 24, the management decided to close the works on December 9, reopening on January 3. The men contend that they will lose the benefit of holiday pay for three statutory holidays—Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. The spokesman for the men said they didn’t object to two extra weeks’ holiday, but to being given two weeks before Christmas.
