LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 29, 1887.) Concert at Hampstead.—A concert in aid of the treat fund of the Hampstead School was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Friday evening. There was a large attendance, all the available seating accommodation being occupied. The Mayor, Mr T. Sealy, occupied the chair. A miscellaneous programme, contributed to by the children attending the school, assisted by friends and others, was presented. The whole affair passed off most successfully, each item being warmly applauded. The infants, during the course of the evening, rendered several pieces in really creditable style. These were as follows:—“Nov/ We Little Children Assembled in School,” “Here We Stand Hand in Hand,” “Raise Your Hands if They are Clean,” “Now Let us Match Our Teachers’ Hands,” trio, with chorus, “Little Bird You Are .Welcome,” and a very difficult, comical, and pretty piece, “One Finger, One Thumb Keep Moving.” Recitations were given by Misses Jane Addis, Kate Rattray, and Mary Stigley, in an excellent manner. Pianoforte solos were contributed by Mrs Mayne and Misses Blanche Fowke and Emma Orr; and a violin duet by Masters Orr, with a piano accompaniment by Miss Alice Orr TWENTY-FIVE- YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 29, 1912.) Mr John Lambie.—At the meeting or the Ashburton County Council yesterday, Mr John Lambie took his seat for the first time after his trip to England. He was welcomed by the chairman, who said he was pleased to see their old friend looking so fit and well. He hoped they would have the help of Mr Lambie on the Council for some years to come. Mr Lambie thanked the chairman for his welcome, and said he was very glad to be back and amongst them once more. In all his travels, he had not seen a better place than Canterbury.
