BOYS’ BRIGADE
A SUCCESSFUL YEAR. DISPLAY AT PARENTS’ NIGHT. The Third Canterbury Company of the Boys’ Brigade, attached to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, concluded its year’s activities last evening with a parents’ night in St. Andrew’s Hall. A programme was given showing the usual activities of the Boys’ Brigade. A short service of worship was conducted by the Chaplain, the Rev. R. S. A\ atson.
Inspection was carried out, and team games were played under the direction of Captain A. G. Horne and Lieutenant F. Shearer. A very line gymnastic display was given by the boys, who are regularly instructed in gymnastics by Aiessrs A. and G. (.'alder, apparatus being lent by St. Andrew’s Physical Training Club.
The final lecture of a series on first aid and ambulance was given by Dr. G. I. Aliller, the subject being “Poisons and: their treatment.”
Captain A. G. Horne announced that a silver medal, incorporating the badge of the Boys’ Brigade, had been presented to the Company by Air FJ. R. Stewart, in memory of his son. This trophy, to ho known as the “Stewart Memorial Aledal,” is to he awarded weekly to the smartest boy on parade. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Stewart for his gift. Thanks were also expressed to officers and lecturers. Five boys recently sat for an educational test, based on lectures given during the year by the Chaplain on “Paul the Dauntless,” and certificates were presented at the close of the evening to Evan Lewis, Euan Aloore, Bruce Smallbone, Malcolm Watson, and Robin Wood.
A short programme of music was given by the boys, the items being: Song, Roy Vincent; pianoforte solo, Alan Welsh; mouth organ solo, Lawrence Osborne, and items by a mouth organ band of seven members. Supper, provided by the parents, brought an enjoyable evening to a close.
