COMPULSION URGED.
SWIMMING IN THE SCHOOLS. (Per Press Association.) OAMARU, This Day. The opinion that swimming should be a compulsory item in the curriculum of every school was expressed by the Mayor of Qamaru (Mr M. F. Cooney) yesterday evening when the Borough Council was discussing the “learn to swim” week. The present method of spasmodic voluntary instruction was not good enough, said Mr Cooney, every child should he taught to swim. It was high time the Education Department moved in the matter, which was a national, not a parochial one.
