LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From flic “Guardian,” Nov. 26, 1887.) Borough Council.—Un account of a public meeting being held on Monday evening in order to afford the candidates for the [Mayoralty an opportunity to express their views on municipal affairs, and also to allow of the question of procuring a steam fire engine to he considered by the burgesses, the Boiough Council meeting on that night will be held at 7, instead of 7.30. Robin Hood Combination—The Robin Hood Combination gave their second performance in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Thursday night to an audience of about forty. The programme, which was an entire change from the previous evening, was gone through with great spirit, in spite of the ‘beggarly array of empty benches.” It is a pity that the Company did not receeive more substantial support during their visit here. Wool Sale.—The first local wool sale of the season will be held on December 9. County Council.—Mr W. C. Walker has been elected to represent the riding of Mt. Somers in the County Council. His was the only nomination received. Tea Meeting.—A tea meeting in connection with the Lauriston Presbyterian Church will be held on Friday, December 2. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 26, 1912.) Prize-winners.—Among the Ashburton prize-winners at the North Otago A. and P. Show were:—Two-year-old draughts, Mr W. J. Taylor 2; reserve champion draught stallion, Mr J. Boag’s Black Douglas; hunters, Mr R. Keith 2 and: 3. Smart Work.—The Ashburton police are usually very successful when they start out to discover the author of any crime. A short time ago a letter receiving box was torn from a telegraph post at the corner of Victoria and Cass Streets, and the police have now secured sufficient evidence against one or more young men to bring a case before the Magistrate’s Court. Tender Accepted. The Borough Council has accepted the tender of Messrs John Chambers and: Sons for supplying the suction gas plant necessary in order that the Electric Lighting Company might be provided with the additional power it requires. The tender for a two-unit plant was £2278, without coupling, or £2424 if coupling should be required. One unit is to be installed by May, 1913, and the other by April 1, 1914, or sooner if required.
