PACIFIC SHIPPING.

THE REPORTED “MELTING POT.” MR SAVAGE SURPRISED. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 24. When the cablegram from Australia was referred to him suggesting that the whole of the proposals for safeguarding British shipping interests in the Pacific were in the melting pot, the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) stated to-day that it was news to him to know that any alteration had taken place in the position. He added that they had been trying to get one of the new ships registered in New Zealand for the obvious reason it would carry New Zealand manning and conditions, which they claimed would he better than those of any other country. Asked if that request had had any influence on the discussions, Mr Savage said that so far as he knew it had been no handicap to going on with the proposals, but the last w r ord had not been said, or he should hope not.
