FIRST CARNIVAL J)F SEASON. PROGRAMME AT EAST ASHBTJR- ' TON. The first swimming carnival of the season was held at the Hampstead baths when the East Ashburton Swimming Club opened its year’s programme. declaring the baths open, the president (Mr T. Lionel Crooks) said the Club had a record to be proud of. In the last twelve months it had spent over £IOO in improvements, and it had done more to encourage and improve swimming than any Club in the County. In common with other Centres throughout the Dominion, the Ashburton Centre was organising a learn-to-swim week from December 6 to December 11. It would giye demonstrations at aIL the baths in and near the town, and he urged, the people to give full support to the movement. “Tire time is fast approaching,” Mr Crooks sai<D “when the teaching of swimming will be given much more attention in the schools. People must be taught to swim when they are young.” He added that New Zealand had an unenviable record, in that deaths by drowning among pedple who could not swim were higher than in any other country.
