SPORTS AND BREAK-UP. DECISION OF THE COMMITTEE. The Ashburton East School Committee held a. meeting this week, when there were present. Messrs AA T . S. Kerr (chairman), G. Fowke, H. Money, E. H. Childs, J. Cook, S. Groves, and D. McKinnon. The headmaster (Mr S. G. Macfarlane) reported that the roll numbers for the last five weeks were 481, 484, 486,486 and 486, and the attendances 453, 450, 457 , 449, and 450. He suggested that the school sports be held on December 16, and the break-up on December 17. It was decided to bold the school sports on December 15 and the break-up on December 16. It was agreed to give the children in Primers I and II toys for Christmas as usual, and that the balance of a grant of £5 be spent on picture books for the primer classes. A very satisfactory report on the school was received from the inspectors, and the chairman congratulated the headmaster and staff on the progress being made by the school. It was agreed to award dux medals again this year. The committee, decided to point out to the Canterbury Education Board that the position of a teacher for the special class for backward children had not yet been advertised.
