THE SILVER BAND.
TO ATTEND THE CONTEST. Reporting to a meeting of the Citizens’ Committee of tire Ashburton Silver Band the Conductor (Lieutenant AY. H. Usborne) stated that in order to give th? younger members of the Ashburton Silver Band an opportunity of hearing the best soloists and bands in the Dominion, the Band Committee had strongly recommended that the band should attend the annual Dominion contest at Palmerston North next February.
The band, he said, had lost the services of its soprano player, Air A. McMasters, who had left for Invercargill, and two other soloists who were unable to play for health reasons. It could be confidently expected that the band would be able to put up a reasonably good showing. Air G. D. H. Hefford (chairman of the Citizens’ Committee) presided at the meeting. Alembers of the committee commented on the advisability of the band attending the contest, and it was decided to give every possible assistance to the carnival, which will be held by the band at the Ashburton Domain on December 27, 28, and 29, to raise funds to pay the expenses. It was agreed that should unforseen circumstances prevent the band from competing, the money raised should be kept in a separate contest fund.
