SWIMMING.

THE ASHEIURTON CENTRE. Centre championship events were allocated to the Ashburton Club by the annual meeting of the Ashburton Swimming Centre last evening, when Mr A. Thomson presided. Because of the bad weather and the infantile paralysis epidemic, all swimming baths in the Ashburton County were closed last season, and all interclub carnivals had to be abandoned, said the annual, report. Hardie (swimming); handicapper, Mr C. H. Day. The Allenton and Ashburton East Swimming Clubs were given permission to hold their annual carnivals on February 5 and 12 respectively. It was decided to write to the Tinwald, Allenton Ashburton Borough, Ashburton Etast, Ashburton High, and Ashburton Technical High Schools, saying that the centre was prepared to arrange for demonstrations at the various schools during learn-to-swim week next month, and asking if they would set aside a period for instruction to the children during that week.
