CRITICISM OF LORD GALWAY. RETURNED MEN IN REPLY. MESSAGE TO HIS EXCELLENCY. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 22. Resolutions combating the criticism of the Governor-General by the North Canterbury Methodist Synod because of his attendance on a Sunday at a golf tournament held in Christchurch recently were passed at a meeting of the Christchurch Executive of the Returned. Soldiers’ Association to-night. Most of the discussion on the resolutions was taken in committee. • The discussion arose when Dir A. H. Campbell said he desired to ask the opinion of members about the criticism against liis Excellency. Mr D. W. Russell: I don’t think we ought to raise the question regarding religious bodies. Mr Campbell: I am not going to make any comparison between them. The religious conference in question reflected up6n the person of the representative of his Majesty the King in attending a function which we organised. They expressed their opinion and wet ought to express ours. We were responsible for the Governor-General’s attendance. We invited him and we must accept a certain measure of responsibility. As the King’s representative lie cannot defend himself. He is robbed of the right of reply. He has responsibility not to any conference or to us but to the King. Mr Campbell then moved “That this executive deprecates the action of the North Canterbury Methodist Synod in criticising unjustly the action of his Excellency the Governor-General in attending the recent golf tournament held under the auspices of the Returned Soldiers’ Association.” Mr Russell immediately moved that the discussion on the motion be taken in committee, any decisions arrived at to be communicated to the press. Mr Russel P’s motion was. carried. On resuming in open meeting, the vice-president, Mr A. E. Haynes, who presided, reported that Mr Campbell’s motion had been carried, together with another resolution which read as follows: “That this executive expresses to his Excellency the Governor-General its appreciation of his graciousness in attending the annual golf tournament under the auspices of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association, ail action keenly appreciated by all exservicemen who took part. It further trusts that he will favour the Association with his presence at any further gatherings of this nature.”
