ASHBURTON COMMITTEE DECIDES

A decision to hold a camp for the benefit of 24 children of the Ashburton County at Staveley for three or four weeks from early in January was made at a meeting yesterday of the Ashburton Health Camp Association, at which the president (Mr El. C. Bathurst) presided. The selection of suitable children from a list of 81 names submitted by schools in the Ashburton County was left to Dr. Ryburn. The chairman reported having attended a meeting of the council of district executives at Christchurch this week in company with the secretary (Mrs H. J. Constable). He said information was given to the meeting that application must he made to the council for permission to hold camps in the district under its jurisdiction. Dr. M. H. Watt (chairman of the Dominion Advisory Board) had addressed the meeting, giving information concerning the amount raised for th© erection of permanent health camps in New Zealand. Four camps would bo set up in the Dominion, one being in Canterbury. Consideration would he given later to the establishment of a fifth camp which would be located in the North .Island. Dr. Watt had said that after the permanent camps were provided for, assistance might he given to provide special buildings required for summer health camps. None of the money raised for the permanent camps would bo used for maintenance, as the sale of health stamps and donations were providing for that purpose. Mr Bathurst added that the chairman of the Canterbury Executive (Mr F. W. Furby) had announced that the amount of 20 per cent. Avjiich was collected from district executives last year for the maintenance expenses of the council would be refunded. The sum of £l2 12s lOd would be refunded to the Ashburton committee. The proceeds from the art union at present being conducted in New Zealand would he allocated to the various district committees.

Mrs Constable reported that she had attended a meeting of the Christchurch District Committee. It was said that the camp which would be held at Rangiora from the beginning of December until the end of March would accommodate 40 children. Fifteen boys and 15 girls from tlie West Coast would he sent to the camp. It was impossible to accommodate children from Ashburton at the camp in December or January and it was doubtful if they could gain admission during February or March.

A donation of £2 2s was received from the Ashburtdn Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The Ashburton County Council wrote saying that it had deferred consideration of a grant to the Ashburton Health Camp Fund. It Avas reported that sales of health stamps at the Ashburton Post Office lobby yesterday totalled £3 9s lOd.
