PROXIMITY TO UNITED STATES. CANADA’S DEFENCE EXPENDITURE. MINISTER AND SELF-RESPECT. (Received This Day, 12.30 p.m.) VICTORIA (8.C.), November 19. The Minister for Defence (Mr Mackenzie)), defending Canada’s expenditure on war ’planes, said: — “The day has gone when we can sponge on the proximity of the United States and our membership of tlie Empire as substitutes for self-respecting defence.”
