BELGIAN NEUTRALITY

KING'S TALKS IN LONDON

LONDON, March 23

King Leopold snatched an hour from his round of social engagements last evening for a heart-to-heart talk with Mr Eden on Belgium’s desire for permanent neutrality. He made it clear that his country had no wish to- become the cockpit of Europe. The King and Mr Eden were guests at dinner at the Belgian Embassy after the Royal visitor had slipped into London with an entire lack of ceremony.

Belgium wants Britain, France, Germany and Italy to guarantee her territory against invasion. In return none of the guarantors can expect permission to transport troops through Belgium in a war in which Belgium is not involved. Britain and France arc insisting that if they guarantee Belgian independence, they are to be accorded some use of Belgian territory to resist an attack upon them by another Power.
