Samuel Marsden’s first visit to New Zealand ended. 1852—Loss of Birkenhead; 436 drowned. 1863 —Imperial Government relinquished control of Maori affairs. 1880—Opening of railway, Methven to Rakaia. 1916—French auxiliary cruiser Provence sunk in Mediterranean; over 300 lives lost.
