FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (Front the “Guardian,” Feb. '26, 1887) Race Privileges for Auction.—To-day the privileges in connection with the Ashburton Tradesmen’s Racing Club were submitted to auction by Mr J. C. Duncan, when the "following prices were realised:—Gates, £2O; old grandstand £1; horse yards, 15s; right of sports, £1 10s; cards 9s per dozen. The publican’s and confectioner’s booths were withdrawn.

The Hampstead Town Board. —The ordinary monthly .meeting of the Hampstead Town Board was held last evening at the Board’s offices. Present were Messrs G. W. Andrews (in the chair), J. Hunt, and P. Fawcett. A petition for the forming of a road at Trevorton was referred to the Works Committee, which was empowered to employ a man to clear gorse from all roads in the district. The clerk was instructed to write to the County Council asking that body if it were practicable to run a stream of water from the Wakanui creek into Hampstead on the south side of the Wa’kanui Road, the water to be utilised for fire prevention purposes.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,”*Feb. 26, 1912) The Territorials.—Sergeant-Major Thatcher visited Rakaia last evening and put a good muster of territorials through some musketry drill. He will visit Methven on Wednesday night. A Trade’s Picnic.—The grocers’ assistants of Ashburton are moving in the direction of organising a trade’s picnic. The enthusiasm displayed by the workers in the function, and the generous assistance granted by employers, should ensure a successful day’s outing. The date and location of the picnic will he debit with shortly. Visit to England.—Mr C. W. Purnell, solicitor, of Ashburton intends leaving shortly for England. He has booked liis passage by the lonic. Hampstead Town Board.—At . a meeting of the Hampstead Town Board there were present Messrs W. Thompson (in the chair), H. A. Lloyd, R. F. Lewis, and S. Wilson. The headmaster of the Hampstead school (Mr James B. Rorthwick) wrote that, recognising the value of technical and of manual instruction, the school committee had acquired ( a.£ acre section close to the school to teach the rudiments of agriculture.
