A TRANSFORMATION.

AT THE ALLENTON SCHOOL. PAINTED AFTER 16 YEARS. A transformation has been effected by Canterbury Education Board painters at the Allenton School. For the first time in 16 years the interior has been painted, and the outside, which has not had paint for eight years, has also, been given a greatly improved appearance. The painters are still busy on their task, but will be finished well before , the schools recommence on March 1.

Drab walls inside the school have d.is 1 appeared, and bright fresh; classrooms have taken their place. The decorative scheme employed is based on new • principles. Each classroom lias a dif | ferent colour, and all are bright and pleasing to the eye. Shades of pink, green, yellow and orange will form the background for pupils instead of the monotonous and dirty walls of the past. In each room there is a general colour scheme, and the paint lias been applied in carrying intensity of colour to the lower and upper parts of the. wall and to the centre hoards. Ceilings are painted white. The different colours employed in each room should give the pupils a welcome break from monotony as they pass through the school from class to class. The surroundings in which they will work are much more pleasant. The infant room and the adjoining room, which are connected by double doors* were the. ones selected for the orange colour scheme. These ate the brightest rooms of all and should appeal t-o the infants. The double doors can be opened and closed more easily now by the addition of simple catches instead of the rather cumbersome bolts hitherto in use. The storeroom formerly in use at the school has disappeared, giving way to a comfortable office for the headmaster. Another room in the school grounds is to he used for storage purposes. Other improvements include generous shelving for the school library hooks, while, in keeping with the general appearance of the school, desks have been cleanedi and revarnished. Some of the desks which were previously screwed to the floor have had runners added to them to allow of their being shifted. •Cream is the colour selected for tlio outside of the school, and it will ho faced with green and tango. Carpenters have also made extensive repairs toi the woodwork.
