The Matron of the Ashburton Public Hospital (Miss E. J. Watt) is on leave till the end of next week. She is spending a vacation at Timaru.

A motion of sympathy with Mr W. H. Amos in the death of his mother was carried at the meeting of the MidCanterbury Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union, this afternoon.

Eulogistic reference to the work of : Mr I>. F. Macdonald as secretary over the past three years was made at the annual meeting of the Ashburton County Schools’ Sports Association last evening. The president (Mr J. Trevor Thomas) said Mr Macdonald had given universal satisfaction in his handling of all his work. Mr Thomas voiced the regrets the children would feel at Mr Macdonald’s departure for Christchurch next month. He presented Mr Macdonald with a. pipe as a token of the regard of members of the Association. The president’s remarks were endorsed bv Messrs E. S. Chambers, H. Colquh'oun, IS. G. Macfarlane, and M. P. Cooke. Mr Macdonald expressed thanks for the present and said he would take with him pleasant memories of his work in Ashburton, a work that had been a pleasure. He paid a tribute to the sportsmanship of the pupils of the Ashburton schools, and to the co-operative spirit evident among the teachers.

The Controller and Auditor-General (Colonel G. F. C. Campbell), accompanied by Mr If. de L. Lorimer (of the Audit Department, Christchurch), paid a visit to Ashburton local body offices this morning in the course of a tour of the South Island. Departmental questions were discussed with the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods), and the Town Clerk (Mr It. C. Major) at the Borough Council Chambers, with Messrs W. G. Gallagher (chairman), and A. Prentice (secretary at the Hospitable Board office, with Messrs F. Frampton (chairman) and G. Kelly (Countv Clerk) at the County Council office, 'and with Messrs E. F. Nicoll (chairman) and H. G. Kemp (engineersecretary) at the Power Board offices. The Auditor-General discussed matters in connection with the auditing of local body accounts, and the relations and co-operation of audit inspectors with members of local body staffs. The Auditor-General was this morning taken through the Domain by the Mayor and the Town Clerk, and entertained at morning tea, when he extended thanks for the courtesy shown him on his visit.
