MEMORIAL DAMAGED.
VANDALISM SUSPECTED. (Per Press Association.) ROTORUA, November 9. Considerable damage, which bears every appearance of being the work of vandals, was done to the Maori War Memorial in the Government gardens late on Saturday night, when a life-size figure of a Maori chief, holding a taiaha, which stood at the foot of the column supporting a statue of King George, was knocked off its pedestal and broken into several pieces. The memorial was erected by the Maori people, and was unveiled 1 by the Duke of York in 1927. The figure, which is a representation of Rangitihi, the famous fighting ancestor of the Arawa, is one of considerable significance to the Maoris, and resentment is expressed at its destruction. The police are investigating.
