SWORD STOLEN.
'WALLACE MONUMENT OUTRAGE.

Four masked men, on being informed of the way: to the Wallace Monument, near Sterling, stole 'Sir William .Wallace’s gigantic two-handed sword. William Kidd, the 70-year-old caretaker, opened the main door in response to knocking. The men tola Kidd they were Scottish Nationalists, and said: “We have come for the sword.”
They locked Kidd in his room and then climbed to the third floor, smashed the glass case containing the sword, and escaped in a car. The sword was transferred to the monument in 1888 from Dumbarton Castle, where it had lain since Wallace was captured.
