WINNER OF £50,000.
STATION RABBITER AT TAIHAPE. (Per Press Association.) TIHAPE, November 9. The rumour that Mr Walter Devon, a rabbiter on a sheep station at Moawhango, had won the first prize in the Melbourne Cup sweepstake was confirmed to-day. The correct ticket was lodged in a bank in Taihape. The ticket was sold by Miss J. Collins, of Adelaide Street, Tasmania, who receives £IOOO. Mr Devon is 52 years of age. He was born at Gimmerburn, Central Otago, and served in the South African War with the New Zealand! troops. He also served in the Great War as a lieutenant in the Cheshire (British) Regiment. He has lived in Taihape for ten years. Ho was employed, formerly by Mr R. H. Lowry, of Qliinawarua Station, and lately by Messrs Duncan and Tilley, of Springvale Station. Interviewed to-day, Mr Devon said: “Yes, rabbiting is my occupation, but I don’t know what it is going to be in the future.” a
