LATE MR PATTERSON.

TRIBUTE BY THE COUNCIL. MAYOR EULOGISES WORK. As a mark of respect to Mr AA 7 . Patterson, who died on Sunday evening after being Town Clerk of Ashburton for 14 years, the Ashburton Borough Council adjourned its meeting last evening after a tribute was paid to Mr (P'atterson’s services by the Mayor (Mr AA 7 . H. AA 7 oods), who- presided. “It seems hardly necessary to extol the high appreciation we really felt for him or to say very much about his capabilities in carrying out his duties-, as they are so well known to us,” said the Mayor in moving a motion of sympathy to Mr Patterson’s family and. relatives. “His position is one which it will be very difficult for us to fill. I have had quite a long experience with Mr Patterson. From his first visit to Ashburton it has been my pleasure to work in very close touch with him. No one could have conducted the affairs of the Borough with greater care or more efficiently than he considered it his duty to do. On any occasion hewas prepared to- meet councillors to discuss council affairs with them. He carried out his duties impartially and with the full approval of the council. His death was sad and untimely.”

The Deputy-Mayor (Mr E. H. Orr) seconded the motion, which was carried, by members standing in silence. A letter expressing regret at Mr Patterson’s death from the County Clerk (Mr G. Kelly) was read by the Mayor. This stated that the chairman (Mr F. Frampton) desired to express the deep sympathy of the Ashburton -County Council. Reference was made to Mr Patterson’s pleasing personality, Ills efficiency in carrying out his duties, and his willingness to co-operate in all activities for the welfare of the district, which all endeared him to all sections of the community. His death would be regretted by all with; whom he came in contact. He was ever ready and -willing to co-operate with and give a-dvico on local body activities, in the district.

The AVaimate Borough Council, of which Mr Patterson w-as formerly Town Clerk, forwarded a telegram expressing regret at Mr Patterson’s death and sympathy with his relatives. On the motion of the Mayor, the Council then adjourned as a mark of respect. The Borough Offices were closed yesterday afternoon on account of Mr Patterson’s death, and the flag at the Returned Soldiers’ Club was flown at half-mast. SWIMMING CLUBS’ SYMPATHY. At a meeting of the committee of the East Ashburton Swimming Club last evening a motion of sympathy w-as passed with the relatives of Mr Patterson, members standing in silence. At the annual meeting of the Ashburton Swimming Club last evening a motion of sympathy was also passed with the relatives of Mr iPatterson.
