NUMBER 5 SCHEME WORKERS.

(Per Press CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 7. All men employed by the Christchurch City Council under No. 5 Scheme, about 150, are to be dismissed on September 19. One hundred men, employed for five days a, week, with a Government subsidy of £2 5s a man weekly, are to remain in the service of the Council, provided certain financial arrangements can be completed with the Government. A motion to this effect was carried at a meeting of the Council to-night. The meeting was specially called to consider a letter from the Minister ol Labour advising that the award for labouiers would have to be paid to full-time and intermittently employed workers engaged by the Council on relief schemes.

The Mayor (Mr J. W. Beanland) recently stated that to comply with the Minister’s request, the Council would have to pay subsidised workers «n additional 8s weekly or £2OBO a year
