BOXING
KNOCK-OUT IN FIRST ROUND. FIJIAN CHAMPION BEATS LUTTRELL. AUCKLAND, Sept. 7. There was an unexpected ending to a professional heavy-weight boxing contest between Semi, the champion of Fiji and Tonga (13st 61b), and Val Luttrell, of Hamilton (12st 121 b), when Semi knocked out his opponent in the opening round. As in his first bout in New Zealand against Claude Nichol, of Australia, the Fijian opened in a slashing style, driving Luttrell to the corners with deadly left rips. When the bout had been in progress for two minutes, Semi connected cleanly with LuttrelPs jaw. This blow shook the Now Zealander badly, steadying him for a. second rip to the solar plexus, which dropped Luttrell again to the mat. He had not risen at the full count, Semi being awarded the decision. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. THE FINALS DECIDED. WELLINGTON, September 4.
