THE WEATHER.

COLD AND UNSETTLED CONDITIONS. Following a stormy week-end, the weather in Ashburton to-day was cold and unsettled. A chilly wind blew from the south-west, with occasional light showers of rain. Conditions were similar to those experienced during the cold snap last week. A north-west wind blew violently yesterday, and was accompanied by a little rain. The wind changed to the south early this morning. Six points of rain were recorded at the Domain weather station for the 24 hours ended at 9 o’clock this morning. There was a frost of 1.5 degrees yesterday morning.. The maximum temperature yesterday was 60.5 degrees, and on Saturday 60.8 degrees. The inside minimum last night was 36.3 degrees, and on Saturday night 35.7 degrees. Barometric pressure at 9 o’clock this morning had risen to 29.81 inches from 29.33 inches yesterday morning.

The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather:— General inference: A depression passed rapidly across the Dominion last night, and an anti-cyclone is advancing over the Tasman Sea. Pressure is falling again over eastern Australia. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows: Strong south-westerly winds to gales, decreasing shortly and later veering to westerly or north-westerly. Weather cold and changeable, with passing showers, but improving. Hard frosts to-night.
