GOLF.

THE BRISTOL CUP. WON BY W AIM ATE. TIMARU, This Day. The annual contest for the Bristol Cup, between teams representing clubs between the Rakaia and Waitaki rivers, was played on the Kighfield links yesterday. The weather was fine, but a strong wind upset many of the players. The links were in splendid condition. There were 11 entries. The trophy, which went to the team with the best aggregate in the singles and foursomes, was won by the Waimate Club, which has not previously met with success in the competition. Waimate returned an aggregate of 722, being one point in front of the North End Club, Timaru. Ashburton, last year’s winners, finished third with an aggregate of 732. Ashburton finished next to Waimate in the foursomes, which were played in the morning, but fell away in the singles. It was chiefly due to their performance in the singles that the North End team finished second in the aggregate. There was a tie for first place in the handicap foursomes between C. J. Kerr and Y. H. Robinson (Peel Forest) and T. F. Healey and S. N. Griffin (Waimate), who returned a net 77. On a count back Kerr and Robinson won. The first prize in the handicap singles went to C. J. Kerr, but there was a triple tie for second place between T. B. Edwards (Temuka), W. Hedges (Ashburton) and R. L. Martin (Timaru), each of whom returned a net 73. On a count back, Edwards won. Hanrahan and Knight (Rakaia) had a score of 82. Two teams from the Ashburton County entered, namely, Ashburton and Rakaia. The details of their scores are:

AUSTRALIA RETAINS TASMAN CUP. NEW ZEALAND A POINT BEHIND. ADELAIDE, September 3. Australia retained the Tasman Cup, defeating New Zealand by 3§ to 2s. Conditions were ideal. Mrs Britten-Jones and Mrs Negus won the first two holes from Misses Honvell and Fleming, and were three up at the sixth. New Zealand won the next two to be one down at the turn. Both pairs went out in 42. Miss Horwell was not confident on the greens. The Australians won three holes in succession, after the turn, halved the 14th, and won the next two for the match. The golf in the other match, was below the standard expected. Miss Hutton and Mrs Fullerton-Smith played

better than the other two. Little separated the teams, the lead see-sawing. They were square at the ninth. The Australians were out in 43, and the New Zealanders in 44. New Zealand was one up at the 10th, square at the 14th, and one up at the 15th. Miss Kay lifted her head playing her second shot at the last hole, enabling Australia to square the match. The golf in the singles was better. Miss Kay always had the upper hand over Mrs Clevents, leading 1 up at the turn. She continued steadily to the end of the match at the 15th.

Mre Britten-Jones was superior to Mrs Fullerton-Smith over the first 13 holes, at which stage she was 4 up. Mrs Fullerton-Smith then unwound a burst of her best play, the next four yielding two pars and two birdies to square the match. The Australian fluffed her second at the last, Mrs Fullerton - Smith taking the hole in 5, and the match. The Australians always had the lead in the other matches. Miss Hutton was 2 up at the turn, and Miss McLeod was 1 up. Both were lup playing the 15th. Miss Hutton took the 18th, Miss Helean pulling her drive into tiger country.

Miss McLeod and Miss Horwell were square playing the last. The Australian was six feet from the pin with her second. Miss Hox-well was short. Then she ran through and missed the return, to lose the hole to a four. The results were as follow:

Foursomes. Mrs Britten-Jones and Mrs C. J. Negus (Australia) beat Misses J. Horwell and V. Fleming (New Zealand), 5 and 4. Mrs R. A. Clements and Miss E. M. Hutton (Australia) and Miss 0. Kay and Mrs R. D. Fullerton-Smith, all square. Singles. Miss Kay beat Mrs Clements, 4 and 3. Mrs Fullerton-Smith beat Mrs Brit-ten-Jones, 1 up. Miss P. Helean (New Zealand) lost to Miss Hutton, 2 down. Miss Horwell lost to Miss Mona McLeod, 1 down. New Zealand won the first contest, held at Melbourne in 1933, being awarded the honour on the number of holes won, as games were even. In 1934, at Auckland, the Australians won the rubber rather easily.

AMATEUR TITLE OF VICTORIA. FERRIER BEATEN. MELBOURNE, Sept; 3. The surprise of the third round of the Victorian amateur golf championship to-day was the comparatively easy defeat of J. Ferrier by the present title-holder, H. L. Williams. Williams won 4 and 3. Ferrier did not win a hole until the eleventh. The only other hole he won was the fourteenth. The pair had met four times before in five years, Williams winning on each occasion., Williams is a left-hander and, like Ferrier, a very long driver. They are both 6ft 2in in height, but Ferrier weighs 14st 51b, nearly three stone heavier than Williams.

ASHBURTON LADIES’ CLUB. A bogey match played by the Ashburton Ladies’ Golf Club yesterday was wton by Miss J. Dunlop, with a score of eight down.
