STOWAWAYS BEFORE COURT. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August 21. Charged with unlawfully landing in New Zealand, being prohibited immigrants, and with stowing away on the steamer Kaiwarra at Sydney on August 13, James Charles Waters, a hairdresser, aged 25, and Robert Grainger, a seaman, aged 45, appeared before Mr E. Luxford, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. Both pleaded guilty. Mr A. Paul, for the Customs Department, said that the two were stowaways on the Kaiwarra which arrived in port this morning. Waters was an Australian by birth, and, Grainger was an Englishman. They were destitute and stowed away in order to look for work in New Zealand. “It is unfortunate for them,” said Mr Paul, “but if they are allowed to stay here they may become a charge on the, community. Arrangements could he made to send them back, possibly by tlie Wanganella next week.” “Unfortunately for both of you, the law is quite definite on tin’s point.” said the Magistrate. “The only thing the Court can do is to send you back.” An order for deportation was made, and a direction given that they be held in custody until then. Prosecuting on a second charge SubInspector Roach said the men stowed away in the coal bunkers at Newcastle. They went ashore at Sydney, but returned and stowed away again before the ship sailed for- Wellington. The accused were convicted of stowing away and were discharged.
