FIRST CALL ON AGED MOTHER. MR JORDAN REACHES LONDON. FAVOURABLE IMPRESSION MADE. (United Press Association —Copyright.) (Received This Day,, 9.35 a.m.) t . LONDON,, .August 21. A crowd of 100 in addition to Sir 11. Batterbe'e (Assistant Under-Secretary of State for the Dominions), Sir James Parr and other officials, welcomed Mr W. JJordan, the new High Commissioner for New Zealand, at Waterloo station. , The whole street turne'd out to greet Mr Jordan later in the morning when he visited his 84-year-old mother at Harrim. gay, in north London. • Mr Jordan was affected by the warmth of his welcome. Interviewed by a representative of the Associated Press .Mr Jordan attributed it to Britain’s goodwill toward New Zealand.

Hundreds of neighbours hung over their fence's when Mr Jordan greeted his mother in the front garden. His mother told an Associated Press correspondent that she was ever so proud to see her only boy come home as High Commissioner. While! press photographers were busy, his mother, who had prepared dinner, called, “Come along; dinner’s ready.’’ Mr Jordan replied, “That’s just like old times.’’ He took his mother's arm and entered the house.

Mr Jordan deeply impressed representatives of the London press, whom he received at his hotel. He deliglite'd his audience with tales of police duty in Limehouse. He said: “New Zealand earnestly seeks Britain’s co-operation in her efforts to make the Dominion contented and prosperous. New Zealand desires to extend her trade to Britain and to invite British pe'ople to settle in New Zealand. I believe the time will come when migration can be resumed. The present population must first be employed. New Zealand supports collective security and considers that peaceful progress of the world can be achieved only through a propel lyorganised Le'a.gue of Nations. If elected to the League Council, New Zealand will do all in her power to further League principles.” Mr Jordan plans to visit the. United Kingdom outposts in connection with trade expansion. One of Mr Jordan’s first official duties will be to represent New Zealand, with Sir James Parr as a codelegate, at the Assembly of the League of Nations in September.
