LOOKING BACK.
FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 22, 1886) School at Westerfield. —The householders of Westerfield having asked that a school might be established in that district, the Board of Education has resolved. ‘ That the usual course be adopted , dz., that a petition should be submitted containing the necessary detailed information.’ The Racing Clubs.—At special meeting of the Tradesmen’s Racing Club several of the speakers urged that steps should be taken to form a new racecourse in the neighbourhood and strike out a line of action entirely independent or the senior local ciuo. We have not a single word to say against the proposal to form a new racecourse, the present reserve is totally unfit for the purpose, nor have we any desire to uphold specially the policy or position of the Ashburton Racing Club; but we do hope, in the interests of the local sport, that before any radical departure is taken by either club, an effort will be made to amalgamate the forces of the two institutions. County Watojr Races-*-Particulars of Ashburton water races lajd on the table of. the House of Representatives show that.the length-of artificial water races is 800 miles, of which there ate 30 miles of main channels and i 7 of distributing channels.
