SCHOOL RUGBY MATCHES. HIGH SCHOOL PLAYS ST. ANDREW’S. The annual Rugby fixtures between the first and second fifteens of the Ashburton High School and two teams from St. Andrew’s College were played, at Ashburton yesterday afternoon. The High School first fifteen beat St. Andrew’s second, fifteen by 9 points to nil in fine senior match, and St. Andrew s won the junior match by 5 points to nil. Rain continued intermittently throughout the games. After some loose play at the start ot the senior game, St. Andrew’s made a good run, but was stopped at the corner. The visitors handled very well, considering the greasy ball. The High School backs went away well from a ruck, but their rush was stopped in the St. Andrew’s twenty-five. The visitors eased the pressure wiith a penalty kick. Barton (High School) made several fine efforts, and just before half-time Le Lievre made a great breakaway for St. Andrew’s. Scon after the second spell began Bowden (High School) went over the line for a try. Shearer’s kick failed. High School 6 St. Andrew’s 0 Shortly after Finlay (High School) broke away to score. Representative trial matches were played on the Ashburton Domain yesterday afternoon between town and country primary schoolboys. Town won the senior match by 3 to nil, in a fast, open forward game. Martin scored after a good run from the twenty-five. Shearer, Body, Woolley, Baynes, Cornwall, and Taylor did good work for the country team, and Reddecliffe, Stokes, Martin, Letham, and Woodside were the most prominent of the town players. The junior match was won by town by 6 points to nil. The game was spoilt by the heavy ground, and the slippery ball. Prentice scored from a passing rush. In the second half, the town forwards dribbled with great clash. From a good opening by Colquhoun, Porter scored a fine try well out. The most prominent country forwards were j Daly, Childs, and Nicholls, and Clarke and Alexander showed up well in the back line. For town, Prentice, Porter, Smart, Stock, Bryan, and Hill were prominent. Mr D. L. E. McDougall refereed both matches.
