LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian,” June 17 , 1886). An Invalid Election—A meeting of the householders ofthe Tinwald School District will. be held at the school house, Tinwald, this evening for the purpose of electing a new school committee. It will be recollected that the annual election held in April was de-' clared invalid, in consequence of every adult male and; female having been allowed to vote. Irrigation Report—The Irrigation Committee of the A-shburton County Council completed the compilation of its report on Saturday. The report will be submitted at the next meeting of the Council. ' Census Returns.——The census returns for this district are not yet completed, but we believe the following will be found to be the respective population of» each of the two local electoral Jistricts.—-—Ashburton 4,789, Wakanur, 5001. ' , I Methven Gold Fever.——The gold} fever has penetrated to Methven. Many residents of the township left yesterday en route to Kimberley. Sixpenny Entertainments—The first of a. series of sixpenny entertainments to be given during the winter months will take place in St. Stephen’s 'Schoolroom om- Friday evening. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” June 17, 1911),. Violets in Wiliter—Notwithstanding the advent of wintry weather, a particularly fine show of fully developedviolets is to be seen in many of the gardens of Ashburton and its suburbs, while other spring flowers, such as primroses, narcissi, anemones, and cowslips have been blooming, more or less for several weeks past. Borough Council Candidateer J. D. (J‘robbe was to—day nominated by, Messrs T. Barber and G. Beaumont as a candidate for the seat on the Barough Council rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr T. F. Gibson. A Deserted Hotel.—-As an evidence of the wanton destructiveness of certain persons of the genus larrikin, it may be mentioned that practially every window in the premises known as the Ashburton Hotel has been smashed. The building, in its present deserted and battered (condition, is undoubtedly an eyesore to the town, though perhaps to some people a pleasing evidence of the results of No-Lic-ense. .

No-License D'elegates.—-The Rev. W. J. Elliott and Messrs G. \V. Andrews and W. T. ‘Lill, delegates to the annual conference of the New Zealand Alliance at Wellington returned to Ashburton to-day.
