THE ASHBURTON TROTS. the concluding events. As was deserved by the Ashburton trotting Club, the winter meeting on .Saturday was a wonderful success. The weather was cloudy, with a chill wind blowing from the north. The programme attracted patrons from far ana wide and the attendance was unusually large. The totalisator handled £23,340, compared with £14,330 10s last year. Money was shut out of every race and when the machine closed for the last race, prospecting investors were standing 30 and 40 deep at each window. The meeting went through without a hitch and patrons spent a really good day’s trotting. Passing the stand the leaders were Harlequin, Repeal, Royal Palm and Casanova. At the back, Harlequin was still out in front from Repeal, with Civic, Royal Palm and Casanova next; There was no change till the su‘aight was reached, when Casanova Went. on to win by two lengths from Unillard, while a similar distance back was Lucky Jack. The leaders at the: stand were Marie‘ Celeste, Wise Guy, Noble Prince and Golden Gross. Along the back, Subsidy moved into third .place and Rongomai was next.
