MAREO’S RETRIAL

LAST WITNESS FOR DEFENCE. DOCTOR’S EVIDENCE 0N DRUGS. MEDICINAL AND FATAL DOSES. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. There is a continucnce of keen public interest in the retrial of Eric Mareo for the alleged murder of his wife Thelma; which entered its third week this morning. ' Ernest William Gieson, medical practitioner, of \Vellington, gave evidence that he had read the depositions from the time Marco: was committed for trial in the Lower Court and advised the defence. From his knowledge of harbituric drugs he would accept generally the statements of Dr. Gilmour relating to the average medicinal dose and the average fatal dose. In view of the evidence concerning her highly nevvous and excitable temperament it could be said of Mrs Marco that she was likely to lie susceptible to drugs. There was nothing striking about the evidence that she had. taken out Hess than 100 grains. No inference could be drawn from the amount of veronal extracted after death from various organs. - It could be guessed at but not determined.
