REBUILIDING RUIN‘ED OUETTA

LESSONS FROM JAPAN AND NEW ZEALAND.

Interesting work in connection with the rebuilding of Quetta, which suf—fered so severely in the disastrous earthquake last year, has been done recently by Colonel A‘. C. Amy, D.S.O'., IH),, Director of Hygiene and Pathlrl ologry at Army Headquarters, Simla, India, who with his wife arrived on a‘! holidayr visit to New Zealand by the: Monowai. Buildings which had not“ beeli destroyed by the earthquake were being pulled down and the whole townl ‘was to be rebuilt with ezuthquake—'l I proolz materials and on hygeuic lines.‘ Colonel Amy said: a great deal of‘ town~plauning work had been necessary, but it had been expected to start, the actual. reconstruction at the l)(‘lginning of April. The «experience of New Zealand and the lessons learnt in the D‘Ollllnlml had been most helpful in preparing; plans for the rebuilding of the. town. All available works and re—cords of earthquake—proof construction from Japan and New Zealand were he,iner consulted. The work is being car—ried out. hy the section Colonel Amy directs in Conjunction with the Royal. l‘lngineers. \Vhen completed Quetta will be a model of enrthmmlre-prooi eonstruetion.

During the past three or four years there had been a. great reduction in the ineidenee: of malaria, especially I‘e'laps{ ing malaria, in the Tndian Army. C‘olj onel Amy said. This was due largoly‘g ito the introduction of new synthetic. drugs. whieh had eii’eeted a marked improvement. ; Colonel Amy. who is on his firsfi VisitE to New Zealand. has 30* years’ service. in his Pl'Pdlt, having served four years and a half in France and Belgium, one‘ year with the Army of Occupation in Germany, 17 years in Indim and? seven ‘ \‘OEII'S and; a half in England. He and his wife will spend three months in the Dominion before proceeding to England.
