THE WINTER MEETING; PARISIENNE WINS SAP‘LING . STAKES. FAVOURITE IN THIRD PLACE. COUNTY HANDICAP TO CLOUDY RANGE. _ The attractiveness of the programme prepared by the Ashburton Trotting Club for its winter meeting on the Ashburton racecourse to—day was de—monstrated in the very large attendance of patrons. People from all: over New Zealand were present, and the special train from Christchurch was one of the largest race trains seen for years. The feature on the programme was, of course, the classic event the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, and, followers of trotting in every province of the Dominion were on the course for the running. ‘ The ribbon was presented to ‘the‘ owuer of the winning horse in the 1 Sapling Stakes by Mr F. B. Robilliard J (vice-president), and the badge was placed on the horse’s neck by Mrs Robilliard amid scenes of enthusiasm.

T‘he attendance before the start 01 the meeting amounted to thousands, and in 'the early part of the afternoon many more patrons Teached' the course. 'The track was in the best of order. Lord Ernleigli had a bad break but maintained place pretty well.‘ Swift Guy was first into the straight from Guy Hugo, the latter winning on the run home by three lengths from Great Linnet, with Lord Ernleigh two lengths hack, third. This event provided the first false start on the Ash‘burto-n course for many years, and there was some trouble in getting the field away a second time. The leaders passing the stand were Lord Axworthy, Buddy, {Serene Bingen, Elite Rey, Ann Pointer and Reymere. Buddy led frown Ann Pointer and Lord Axworthy round. at the back, and then there were some changes, Buddy being first into the straight from d’oste Haste, with Renown’s Best showing up in a handy place. The lastanamed went on to win easily by four lengths from Fine Art, which was three lengths ahead of the third horse, Reymere. Lord Axworthy was; fourth. Times, 3.23, 3.23 26, 3.24.

Cloudy Range well toward the tail of the field. Along the back Ygung Frank went to: the front, . and Cloudy Range moved up rapidly to third place. These two were together at the entrance to the straight. Cloudy Range then went easily ahead. and won by three lengths from, De Soto. The third hearse, Peter Looanda, was three lengths back and fourth place was

There was a good start, and the leaders passing the stand were Becky Direct, Loyal Pat, Frisco Boy! and Donald Dhu. Going to the back, Becky Direct was in front from Loyal Pat, Southern ‘Chief, Frisco Boy, Donald Dhu, Effie Parrish. Parisienne was losing ground at that stage. At the far bend, Zincali came up to challenge the leaders. Zincali andl Loyal Pat were together in the lead with about three furlongs to go. Loyal Pat hit the straight first, with Zincali next from.
