MODESTY AND DIGNITY
TWO BEAUTIFUL CHARACTERISTICS Do you remember that beautiful poem of a past generation which ran :——- “Down in a green and shady rl-ell, A Modest Violet grown”? It was a poem. It was not a business announcement. The location of the dell was not stat—ed. The fact that it was a green and shady may have been an asset, but if it could not be found, what was the use of it? The Violet itself was, no doubt, a de—lightful flower, but if its address was so indefinite, what hope had: it of displaying its charms to anyone likely to be attracted by it? Many people in the Jewellery trade think their job is to be violets. You can’t get business on those lines! There are other people who think that dignity is preferable to selling stuff. Dignity may be all right on the judicial bench—4t is not an overwhelming, asset for a go—getter salesman. It isn’t dignity you want—it’s orders. Don’t be so .concerned about dignity that you miss a. chance of business! Modesty and. Dignity are two beauti—l'ul characteristics}. but in the business world you’ll find they lead only to oblivion. Advertising and adaptability pay infinitely better.—-—-“ The British Jeweller.”
