FOOTBALL.
ASHBURTON RUGBY REFEREES. At the annual meeting of the Ashburton Rugby Referees’ Association, Mr J. MacMillan (president) presided. The balance-sheet showed a small credit balance. The following officers were elected : President, Mr L. Hadley; vice-presi-dent, Mr C. Miller; honorary secretary, Mr S. Alexander; treasurer, Mr G. V. Furby; delegates to Referees’ Appointment Board, Messrs Hadley and Alexander. Messrs S. Burrows and, 0. Stevenson were elected members of the Association. Members stood in silence out of respect to the memory of Mr H. J. Chapman, who was a life member, and whose death occurred during the year. PRACTICE MATCH AT METHVEN The Rugby football season was officially opened at Methven on Saturday, when there .was a fair muster of players. Mr J. Wootton .(president of the club) expressed the hope that players would have an enjoyable season. After he had kicked off a practice game was played. Arrangements have been made to play the first match on Saturday, when a team from Christchurch will play the local team at the Domain.
