RESTORED TO DUTY.

OUTSPOKEN AMERICAN GENERAL. (United Press Association— Copyright.) WASHINGTON, April 13. General Johnson Hagood was restored to active duty to-day aftei two personal appeals to Mr Roosevelt. He has been assigned to the important command of the Sixth Corps Area, Chicago, thus closing an incident which threatened to have considerable political repercussions. General Hagood, third ranking general officer in the American Army, uy direction of the President, was on February 24 relieved of the command oi the Eighth Corps Area and further duty at Fort Sam, Houston, Texas. He was ordered to proceed home to await orders. This order followed frank criticism by General Hagood of other Government departments. He told the House appropriations committee that it was harder for him to get five cents to buy a lead pencil than to get 1000 dollars to teach hobbies _ to mentally deficient boys. At they time this statement, and others of. similar import, attracted little attention, but after the order of the War Department there were heated discussions in Congress and elsewhere, and a. military sub-committee was set up to decide if the case merited investigation.
